EXAMPLEs OF HOW we've helped
FREEPORT HIGH SCHOOL
Freeport Friends has delivered items such as ear buds, sneakers, boots, coats, car repair financial assistance, bras, gas cards, snacks, Christmas presents, and clothing gift cards to students at Freeport High School. In 2018, we also helped a teen heading off to college complete his school supply lists, which included items such as food, notebooks, sheets, and a computer.
SENIOR BIRD FEEDER PROGRAM
Through generous donations, the Freeport Friends bird feeder program provides Freeport seniors with a bird feeder and a local volunteer who visits periodically to refill the feeders. Our goal is to foster community connects with our beloved seniors through the therapeutic pastime of birdwatching and support them as they age in place.
THE MAFUMBA FAMILY
Freeport Friends was approached to assist an asylum seeking family, Prince, Tahiz, and Heaven, settle in Freeport. We helped them find and furnish long-term housing, acquire clothing and everyday needs, successfully gain work visas, start ESOL classes through Freeport Adult Education, and we assisted them in acclimating to our country and town. Prince now works as a substitute French teacher at Freeport High School, Tahiz is working at Gritty's and the family is thrilled with their new community.
MEAL PREP & DELIVERY
Freeport Friends has prepared and delivered meals to multiple families in need across Freeport. These deliveries are typically made to homes where a family member has experienced a medical crisis or is undergoing medical treatment.
Freeport Friends has connected volunteers with a number of elderly Freeport community members. These volunteers visit, do some meal prep, and some light chores around the house.
ARTHER AND FAMILY
After struggling with homelessness and living in a tent for almost a year, Arther, a local father of two, came forward to ask for help from Tawni Whitney (then part of the Neighbor Brigade). Tawni helped Arther and his family find housing, a full-time job with benefits, and she helped him with small day-to-day needs, such gas cards, clothing, and assistance connecting with the Freeport Food Pantry. Now that they're back on steady ground, Arther is training to be a volunteer fire fighter for Freeport and his kids are thriving and frequently making the honor roll at school.
